Typically, this is done using the as-built condition as a baseline.

Maintenance systems may consist simply of written procedures and inspection timeline schedules, or may be expanded into software systems with use of tried data management techniques. In this case a computer based system can be developed as a powerful tool for optimizing limited maintenance resources for effective results, by defining critical elements against a time history of system conditions, thus allowing for early detection of potential problems.
